Massage therapists practice in a variety of settings, including private offices, clinics, nursing homes, studios, and sports and fitness centres. Some also fly to the homes or offices for patients. Usually, they are trying to provide a calm, relaxing environment.
Typically therapists ask new patients about symptoms, medical history and desired outcomes. They may also perform an evaluation by contact, identify painful or stressed areas and decide how much pressure to apply.
The patient is usually lying on a bed, either in loose-fitting clothes or undressed (covered with a blanket, with the exception of the area being massaged). The therapist can use oil or lotion to minimize skin friction. People are given massage therapy sometimes while sitting in a chair. A massage session may be relatively brief, but may last for an hour or even longer.
