Australian Open champion Jordan Spieth believes his playoff win at Royal Sydney is the exact pressure test he needed to push on into 2017 and take his game to another level. While it was two clutch par putts that saw Spieth join locals Cameron Smith and Ashley Hall in a three-way playoff on Sunday, a perfect tee- and second shot at the first extra hole pleased the American far more as he lifted the Stonehaven Cup for a second time. With two wins earlier in 2016, Spieth had already enjoyed the kind of season any touring professional would be proud of.But he knows what a second triumph in Sydney could mean after he took the momentum of his 2014 Australian Open victory into the Hero World Challenge where he recorded a 10-stroke win, and then powered to one of the most memorable seasons on record.I hope to take this into a couple of weeks from now, improve on areas that need improvement and sustain what was solid, Spieth said Sunday evening. From there, then address what the goals are for the next year. Im not exactly sure yet, thats normally what we do in the month of December is figure out what were looking forward to in 2017.But I think a lot can be drawn back on 2014 into 15. So its really nice to, again; the way we played the playoff I think is going to do wonders for me. Ive been in a little bit of a stall hitting shots when they mattered.[At] Colonial, I saved myself with a lot of putts...to hit those two shots in there right where I wanted to hit them. And then to make the putt with it is really big going forward, and its something I can draw on all next year is look back on the way this one was finished out.Spieth has been constantly reminded of his meltdown at The Masters since it occurred back in April, and he was again asked about it after his victory at Royal Sydney. While he didnt buy into talk the fashion in which the win came could help bury his Masters capitulation, Spieth said it augured well if a similar situation arose down the track.Yeah probably, its kind of old news. Until I get back there [Augusta] again, Im sure it will come back to me again there, Ill get plenty of questions about it then, he said.Yeah I still had clutch swings, I just had one bad one. I didnt hit the ball at all well that week and was still leading by four or five shots with nine holes to goBut to answer your question, its been kind of something that, its very difficult to do. I mean you cant practice for being very nervous; you cant get on the range and say, okay, get nervous -- it doesnt work that way.It just comes through experience and it just seemed that my tendencies were always to get underneath the ball and miss it right. And so I just committed to my swings the last couple of times today, in that playoff, and that is tough to do when the lefts trouble because you think youre going to hit it left - its uncomfortable. But they went right on line. Now I know that and I think thats going to do wonders going forward. BENSALEM, Pa. -- Trainer John Servis isnt sure what the long-term future for Cathryn Sophia holds. He is pretty certain that she will give undefeated Songbird everything she has in Saturdays Grade 1, $1 million Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing.Ive been confident in her from the first day she ran, Servis said Wednesday morning at Parx. Shes going to show up, shes going to bring her game. If shes good enough, thats the question. Thus far, nobody has been good enough to beat Songbird, who has won all 10 of her starts by a combined 54-3/4 lengths. That includes six Grade 1 victories, most recently in the Alabama and Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga. While Songbird is 10 for 10, Cathryn Sophia has won six of her eight races, including the Kentucky Oaks, a race Songbird missed due to illness. Cathryn Sophias two losses came in the Grade 1 Ashland at Keeneland and the Grade 1 Acorn at Belmont.Arguably, her two losses could be put back on me just training her a little different going into both those races, Servis said.Following the Acorn, Servis gave Cathryn Sophia a significant break. Her training picked up in Saratoga, where she had a brilliant work Aug. 16, four days before Songbird won the Alabama. Servis resisted any temptation to run her in a major stakes at Saratoga and instead ran her in the $150,000 Princess of Sylmar Stakes here, which she won by 6-11/2 lengths in a canter.ddddddddddddHer race was good, Servis said. It wasnt too much; just enough to wheel her right back.Although Cathryn Sophia is 2 for 2 at Parx and has been stabled here for the last month, Servis does not feel she has any home-court advantage over Songbird or Carina Mia, who beat Cathryn Sophia in the Acorn.I understand wanting to get to a place early, let the horse settle in, but when I hear people say, Oh, yeah, I want to get there early and train over the track, well, its never the same track they run on, Servis said.Servis, who has called Parx his home for decades, said the Cotillion has been his major goal for Cathryn Sophia ever since the Kentucky Oaks.Noting that Cathryn Sophia has been a bit of a challenge to train, Servis suggested its a very good possibility the Cotillion could be Cathryn Sophias last race. However, owner Chuck Zacney, who has entered Cathryn Sophia in the Fasig-Tipton sale in November, said he would like to run her in the Breeders Cup Distaff if things go well in the Cotillion. Our intention is to run through the Breeders Cup, Zacney said. I do have her in the Fasig-Tipton sale, but its always easier to enter and scratch. This gives us options, but Im not thinking that far ahead. ' ' '
