From what I can tell, most of the night was spent trying to decide which sucked more: the commercials or the game. At least the NFL got the halftime show it deserved, not the one it needed. Now that [insert winning team here] has taken home the little silver trophy, it’s time to turn to more important things. Baseball awaits, and some overgrown rodent in nowhere Pennsylvania was rousted from his winter slumber to tell us that spring is coming early this year, so we have that going for us, which is nice.It all comes down to healthIn another reminder that Jordan Zimmermann has been fundamentally unable to function asa healthy, un-injured member of the Detroit Tigers, Evan Woodbery of MLive walks us through the discovery and treatment of the pitcher’s latest injury. The story closes with a quote from Zimmermann stating that he knows he’s “still got a lot left”, but that it comes down to health. Let’s hope health isn’t an issue this year. All anglesIf you have yet to tire of the talk surrounding right fielder Nicholas Castellanos and where he will or will not soon be playing baseball, you are in luck. MLB.com’s Jason Beck brings us a mailbag devoted entirely to questions surrounding Castellanos, what could happen if he is or is not traded, and why he will be and when. It’s ten pounds of Castellanos stuffed into a five pound bag. Enjoy.Five Bold PredictionsAnthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press has five bold predictions to share with us for the upcoming season Mike Napoli Jersey , and bold they are.He has the Tigers finishing second in the AL Central, which seems possible in a division where no one really seems to be trying. He also taps Michael Fulmer to be traded, along with Jordan Zimmermann.Additionally, he tabs Spencer Turnbull as an emerging player for the team and proclaims the bullpen as a bright spot. What stands out here? The possibility that there will be a team out that that takes a look at Jordan Zimmermann and sees something they like.Finding a homeThe folks over at FanGraphs took a shot at finding a home for the top remaining free agents. Former Tiger Jose Iglesias is one of those top remaining free agents, and they have him landing with the Milwaukee Brewers. I’m starting to wonder how we got into a situation where Iglesias might not be playing baseball this year.Niko’s CaseNiko Goodrum, a player who remains an under-appreciated signing from last offseason, comes into 2019 as the Tigers’ likely starting second baseman. Jason Beck takes a look at how he took over the position last season, and how he is working to improve this year to be a better everyday option for the club. Whether that’s at second base or in a variety of positions remains to be seen.Tip of the capAfter a one-year experiment in which they probably sold a slightly larger amount of merchandise than prior seasons, the Tigers are going away from what has been described as the “gas station logo.” They are reverting back to the traditionally smaller Olde English D. This is a welcome return to the status quo, although it feels a little weird focusing on the logo at a time when the rest of the team is a hot mess. Hey, at least they are doing one thing the fans like.Baseball is awesomeRoger Clemens: still filthy at 56.Around the hornIs Matt Davidson the latest experiment in the two-way player craze? Can you beat Tony Romo at baseball predictions? Up close on baseball’s borders. David Stearns will have a better idea of where his payroll sits after avoiding arbitration entirely this winter"The Brewers have typically avoided arbitration hearings in the past, and that remains true this year. The team is announcing that it’s reached deals with the six remaining players they had that were arbitration-eligible: Junior Guerra, Corey Knebel, Zach Davies http://www.indiansfanproshop.com/authentic-b.j.-upton-jersey , Travis Shaw, Alex Claudio and Manny Pina. Our Brad Ford covered Knebel’s $5.125 million deal earlier today, and if we know Kyle, he likely has some feelings about Junior Guerra getting $2.2 million from the Brewers. The other figures to know: Shaw got $4.675 million in his first year of arbitration, which still feels like a bargain for someone who’s hit 30+ home runs in back-to-back seasons and is about $500,000 less than what MLB Trade Rumors thought he would get. Another first-time arby-eligible in Zach Davies will make $2.6 million in 2019, which is $200,000 higher than his projection and will buy a lot of orange slices.New Brewer Alex Claudio will earn $1.275 million in his first season with the Cream City Nine:But the most interesting deal of the bunch is Pina’s. After the signing of Yasmani Grandal, Pina looks to be back to serving in a backup role — if he makes the final roster at all — but on top of settling for $1.6 million to avoid an arbitration hearing, his deal also includes a team option for 2020. That’s about $200,000 less than what he was projected to receive. We don’t know yet what Pina’s salary would be beyond 2019 yet if the option was picked up, but it’s intriguing for a couple different reasons. For one, since Pina was also a first-time arby-eligible player, neither side presumably had to do an option for a second year — the Brewers would’ve retained his rights either way.But for Pina Yonder Alonso Jersey , it likely guarantees some kind of raise next season even if he doesn’t play much behind Grandal; for the Brewers, if (but most likely when) Grandal leaves after one season, they know what Pina would cost to keep around if he once again becomes the team’s primary catcher. And that might play into why David Stearns had a little extra incentive to avoid arbitration hearings this winter — certainty is good. With all of those players signed, he has a pretty solid idea of what his payroll is at this point, and how much he might still have left to spend. Any leftover money in his budget could be used to account for any mid-season additions, or, strictly hypothetically speaking, a free agent who can play second base for a few months. As a reminder, arbitration salaries are not fully guaranteed in that teams can still release those players before Opening Day without paying the full price. So that means while the Brewers will go into Spring Training with three veteran catchers (Grandal, Pina and Erik Kratz) and a prospect (Jacob Nottingham) likely vying for playing time, one of Pina or Kratz will likely end up getting cut before the team heads north from Maryvale.
